The second construction milestone of the SNFCC has been completed successfully

Jul 29, 2014
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is proud to announce that, after 10 months of intensive work following the achievement of the first construction milestone in September 2013, and with strict adherence to the project’s construction schedule, the second important part of the construction was completed successfully and on time. This second milestone concerns the loadbearing structure, supporting the buildings that will be hosted within the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Specifically, 100 per cent of the bearing structure—made from reinforced concrete and structural steel—was completed for the buildings of the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Car Park Building. Meanwhile, electromechanical and architectural tasks are being carried out inside the buildings, and the final landscaping and planting operations for the Park are underway.

It is noted that the first construction milestone of the project was achieved in September 2013 and included the completion of the excavation, the foundation works for the Library, the Opera and the Car Park buildings, as well as for the rest of the Park’s buildings, using concrete piles. It also included the completion of the Hill’s formation, which involved the necessary tasks of installing underground gravel piles, the completion of the bulk fill, the configuration of retention walls, the completion of the irrigation tank and concrete works for the Park’s buildings and the Waste Management building.

Within the 23 months that have elapsed since the commencement of construction of the SNFCC, the following construction works have been completed: the foundation, the seismic protection of buildings, the complete (100%) construction of the reinforced concrete building shells, and the construction of the Hill. Furthermore, the construction of the elements making up the energy canopy is underway.

The next step in the construction process includes the initiation of works for the erection of the energy canopy, in the fall of 2014, with its completion expected at the beginning of 2015. Moreover, from September 2014 the planting of trees in the Stavros Niarchos Park will gradually continue while from October 2014 the planting of shrubs will also begin.

It is noted once more, that the construction of the SNFCC is implemented by the Salini Impregilo-TERNA joint venture and the project is expected to be completed in 2016. Upon its completion, the SNFCC will be delivered to the Greek State as a gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
