Through its four basic program areas, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation is going ahead with its new grants, with the purpose of funding and implementing a series of programs and initiatives that support the effort to respond to a broad range of complex social problems, as well as the effort to provide efficient services in the areas of health and medicine, arts and culture, education, and social welfare. In brief, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s recent grants in its basic areas of activity can de described as follows:
- Education: The Foundation, in collaboration with non profits in 7 nations around the world, with Greece among them, is making grants totaling €6,628,000, in continuation of its 16-year tradition of supporting educational programs on a global level.
- Arts & Culture: In awareness of the important role of art and culture in contemporary societies, especially in times of acute social and economic crises, the Foundation approved new grants totaling €1,592,000, in support of programs and initiatives in 4 countries, including – as always – Greece.
- Health & Medicine: In this area, the Foundation will make grants totaling €4,124,000, in 13 countries, including Greece, based on the inalienable right of equal access to quality healthcare services for all.
- Social Welfare: In response to the growing and critical needs that define the area of social welfare on a global scale, the Foundation will provide total funding of €3,266,000 to not for profit organizations in 11 countries, including Greece.
In addition to the above grants, however, and as part of its usual philanthropic activity, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, in full awareness of the ongoing and deepening crisis in Greece, launched in the beginning of 2012 a three-year, €100 million initiative, in order to help alleviate the adverse effects of the socioeconomic crisis in Greece. The aim of the initiative is dual: prevention and immediate relief from the effects of the crisis, and the creation of better conditions for the future.
From the launch of this initiative, in January 2012, until today, the Foundation has approved grants totaling €45 million, to over one hundred not for profit organizations all across Greece, through 135 grants aimed at supporting the social groups and sectors most affected by the crisis.
In particular, as part of its ongoing three-year€100 million initiative for the crisis in Greece, the Foundation approved 13 new grants, totaling €4,309,000, in October. This is the seventh round of grants aimed at providing the greatest possible relief to Greek society, and the Foundation continues to evaluate additional organizations for possible future support.
These grants complement the Foundation’s traditional activities on a global scale, and deem its role increasingly comprehensive, relevant and essential, in the context of the current socioeconomic conditions in our country, without, however, ever being in a position or seeking to substitute the role of the State.
