A new article in Inside Philanthropy spotlights the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) work to support mental health care as an integral part of overall health, especially for young people.

The piece, “How the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Supports Mental Health in Greece and Beyond,” centers on SNF’s $15 million Child Mental Health Initiative, implemented in collaboration with the New York-based Child Mind Institute with support from the Greek Ministry of Health. The new five-year initiative seeks to help young people in Greece, and their families, manage their mental health in a timely and appropriate manner by increasing access to care, contributing to the strength of the mental health system, and empowering frontline healthcare professionals.

The article also covers SNF’s ongoing $500 million-plus Health Initiative in Greece, of which the Child Mental Health Initiative is part; SNF’s commitment to public-private partnership in health; and the Foundation’s history of work in the field of mental health.

“Under our fragmented and incomplete mental health support systems, whether or not you receive the care you need depends on where you were born, your family situation, and the luck of a thousand other circumstances,” says SNF Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos in the article. “We have the tools to do better, and we need to start implementing them, collaboratively and systematically, so that access to effective mental healthcare is not a lucky exception to the rule, but something every young person can expect.”
