Institute of International Education launches Hellenic Diaspora Academic Association to reinforce global ties created by SNF-supported fellowship

Jan 11, 2022
Designed to help develop long-term, mutually beneficial collaborations between universities in Greece and academics in countries including the United States and Canada, the Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program (GDFP) was launched in 2016 by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and in collaboration with the Fulbright Foundation in Greece.

To date, 123 scholars from a diversity of disciplines around the world taken part, collaborating with colleagues in Greece on research and instruction.

Now, to deepen and make more durable the ties formed during the fellowship, the IIE has launched the Hellenic Diaspora Academic Association (HDAA). Announced in 2019, the HDAA was shaped through the input of GDFP hosts and alumni, as well as advisors from existing academic associations. In the year ahead, the Association will issue a call for members and debut an online platform for collaboration.

“IIE has been one of the Foundation’s closest and longest-term partners,” remarked SNF Senior Program Officer Eleni Agouridi at an event marking the launch of the new group on January 11. “SNF’s support for the GDFP is part of the Foundation’s broader effort to further collaborative and mutually productive international exchange of knowledge, experience, and culture.”
