To get to know their city, SNF Paideia fellows circumnavigate it

Sep 23, 2021
Before the school year starts, fellows in the University of Pennsylvania’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Paideia Program took a walk around Philadelphia—literally. The undergraduate fellows joined with faculty and staff to walk the city’s 100-mile perimeter, different groups taking different segments.

“Walking is a great way to mesh dialogue and wellness,” reflected Class of 2024 student Yasmin Abdul Razak. “It lends itself to self-reflection, reflection as a group, and what it means to be a citizen.”

The SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to imagine a new approach to educating students as whole people and citizens, drawing inspiration from ancient Greece and the concept of “paideia,” which indicated the rearing and education of the ideal citizen.
