Special Olympics Hellas travels to Vamvakou

Sep 22, 2021
From September 17-19, Special Olympics Hellas (SOH) traveled to the Greek village of Vamvakou as part of its Families Program and was hosted by the Vamvakou Revival team.

There, 25 Special Olympics athletes and their parents enjoyed the beauty of the mountain village and had the opportunity to try their hand at new activities outdoors and at the renovated village school. Visitors enjoyed the area’s natural beauty on hikes and electric bike rides and took part in sensory and science workshops at the school's modern STEAM center, V.Lab (the Vamvakou Technology Lab, fully powered by SNF).

During the weekend, Special Olympics Hellas and the Municipality of Sparta signed a Memorandum of Cooperation within the framework of SOH’s Development Program, marking the beginning of a partnership that aims to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in the region of Laconia through opportunities to take part in sporting activities.

Both the Special Olympics Hellas programs and the Vamvakou Revival initiative are supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). On behalf of SNF, Program Officers Rosalyn Benjamin and Spyros Alexopoulos traveled to Vamvakou. In her remarks at the event for the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Special Olympics Hellas and the Municipality of Sparta, Rosalyn spoke about the importance SNF places on partnerships for the common good.
