Damien Lewis Stars in Theater of War Project Featured in The New Yorker

Powerhouse performances and uncanny relevance are hallmarks of Theater of War Productions, which redeploys ancient plays to confront modern ills, and both are in full evidence in the company’s latest production.

Plague, overconfident leaders, and ignored warnings set the stage for an online performance of The Oedipus Project featuring Damien Lewis, Jason Isaacs, and Clark Peters, among others. The performance, on September 3 at 2 p.m. EDT, is free with advance registration. As always at Theater of War events, reading of the play will be followed by an open discussion facilitated by Artistic Director Bryan Doerries.

A new piece in The New Yorker asks “Can Greek Tragedy Get Us through the Pandemic?” The author reacts to a past performance of The Oedipus Project and takes a historical long view of Theater of War’s efforts to heal society’s traumas through theater.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has supported Theater of War since its establishment in 2009, including for a free ten-week run of Antigone in Ferguson in Brooklyn last summer.
