A Restart at the Greek National Opera this Fall
06 AUGUST 2020

“It is better to die with honor than live in shame.” Madama Butterfly’s words may make for terrible advice, but they make for great opera. Puccini’s immensely popular work, featuring a star-studded cast, will open the new season of the Greek National Opera (GNO) in early October.

Last week, the GNO announced a captivating program for its 2020 fall season, “Restart,” running from September through December. The GNO’s second online festival, centered on a selection of sophisticated Greek music, will stream in September. The program includes Don Quixote performed by the GNO Ballet and Don Giovanni, a major international co-production between the GNO, Sweden’s Göteborg Opera, and the Royal Danish Opera. The GNO is also preparing a series of forthcoming major co-productions, partnerships with European and U.S. lyric theaters, tours, and significant collaborations with leading artists.

The fall 2020 productions, as well as a yearlong program of events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 to be announced this fall, are made possible through a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) that aims to strengthen the GNO’s artistic outreach.
