New Columbia Global Reports Book on Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protests Launches
Columbia Global Reports is committed to telling timely stories on important but underreported topics.
The short books commissioned by the imprint aim to combine the analytical lens of a scholarly approach with the narrative fluidity of a journalistic one.
The latest publication in the series, Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink, University of California Irvine Professor Jeffrey Wasserstrom focuses on recent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and activists’ historic challenge to Beijing’s ambition.
The launch was marked in New York City on Thursday, February 13 by a panel discussion at the Asia Society & Museum featuring the author, New Yorker staff writer Jiayang Fan, and ChinaFile Editor Susan Jakes. A Washington, D.C. launch event will follow on Sunday, February 16.
Through a 2019 grant, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided support for this publication and the next two in the Columbia Global Reports series, which focus on issues related to the state of democracy around the world. Civic engagement and democratic health are a significant area of focus in SNF’s work though grant-supported projects like the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and the SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
