The SNF Honored with the International Olympic Committee Trophy 2019

Jan 24, 2020
During an event by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) was honored with the International Olympic Committee Trophy 2019.
This year the trophy is dedicated to Sustainable Architecture and Sports and to that end the SNF was honored for its vision behind the development of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), an integral part of which was sustainable and environmentally friendly construction practices as well as the promotion of sports to the general public.

During the same event, the SNF was also honored by the HOC, for our support, as a Major Donor to the Hellenic Olympic Team, in the preparation of Greek athletes towards the 2020 Olympic Games.

The accolades, however, belong to the athletes who strive constantly, both literally and metaphorically; who, with passion, persistence and perseverance, race against unfavorable winds. These athletes include the crew of Rafalina Klonaridou and Maria Bozi, who will represent Greece in the women’s 470 class sailing, as well as the athletes of the National Rowing Federation.

Current support for the National Rowing Federation and the women’s 470 sailing team represent the continuation of a longstanding focus for SNF. Since its inception in 1996, SNF has supported a number of nautical clubs around Greece in an effort to promote water sports, including sailing programs for people with disabilities. SNF has provided past support to other athletes in their preparation for the Olympic Games. The Foundation supported, over two years, the preparation of the national men’s and women’s sailing teams for the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens, as well as that of athletes Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa, who won the gold medal in 470 class sailing in 2004.
