SNF Agora event: From Russia with Bots
15 January 2020

How the Future First Began in Russia, the latest event from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, seems to portend with its title the dawn of a rosy new era. But like so many things on the internet, it’s not what it first seems.

The future SNF Visiting Scholar Peter Pomerantsev envisions is one of pervasive disinformation and influence campaigns. Pomerantsev’s latest book, This is not Propaganda: Adventures in the War Against Reality, draws on his family’s brushes with the KGB and explores what the new informational reality will mean for political life.

This free event will take place Wednesday, January 15, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the Hopkins campus in Baltimore. Advance registration is required.

Drawing inspiration from the Agora of ancient Athens, which was a hub of conversation and debate and the center of the city-state’s democratic governance, SNF committed $150 million to a joint effort with Johns Hopkins University to create the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute in 2018. The SNF Agora Institute brings together experts from political science, psychology, philosophy, and other fields to foster open and inclusive discourse.
