On January 27th, 2020, four separate grant contracts between the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and the Greek State representing components of SNF’s Health Initiative were ratified by the Greek Parliament.
Specifically, the two contracts pertain to the procurement of equipment for laboratories, support for educational and research programs, and scholarships for the Faculty of Nursing at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the three educational nursing units at Evangelismos General Hospital. The two other contracts ratified by law pertain to the design and implementation of an educational program for the prevention of in-hospital infections and of five educational programs for the treatment of trauma.
The five programs for the treatment of trauma include: 1. The Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses program for the training of nursing students, 2. A training program for doctors at the world’s largest trauma center in Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in South Africa, 3. An educational program for surgeons on the use of laparoscopic surgery and arthroscopic simulators, 4. The Prehospital Trauma Life Support educational program for the training of the National Center for Emergency Care’s (EKAV) first responders and 5. The Advanced Trauma Life Support educational program for medical students.
The contracts define the framework and the general terms and conditions under which SNF will implement these grants.
SNF’s Health Initiative, with a total budget expected to exceed $450 million, includes the construction of the new SNF General Hospitals of Komotini and Sparta and the SNF University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, the supply of specialized equipment, and the development of educational programs to enhance medical and nursing care and, by extension, to improve the health of Greece’s inhabitants.
