The quilts, individualized labors of love dedicated to the memory of someone lost to the disease, pay tribute to victims while bringing a little more beauty and softness into the world.
The event draws inspiration from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a monumental 54-ton quilt bearing the names of victims that was conceived in San Francisco in 1985. Each of the quilts displayed in Monaco embodies around 160 hours of work, created with the involvement of supportive community collectives.
H.S.H Princess Stephanie of Monaco, Founding President of Fight AIDS Monaco, attended the event, which was held at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.
Fight AIDS Monaco was created in 2004 to help counteract the effects of the stigma that still clings to the disease. The organization provides psychological and material support to people living with HIV/AIDS, aiming to promote wellness, overcome isolation, and combat discrimination. Their work extends from Monaco into nearby areas of France and, through financial support for local organizations, to Burundi, Haiti, Mauritius, and other countries.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has provided support to Fight AIDS Monaco, most recently through a grant to its La Maison de Vie support center. SNF has provided support to organizations around the world in their work to fight the global AIDS epidemic, including ACRIA, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Born Free, and the Centre for Life, among others.
