“Performing Our Best When the Pressure is On” at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute
18 September 2019

It’s a truism that young people today are more pressed than ever to excel. Barnard College President Sian Beilock will discuss the science behind the pressure in the latest installment of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Brain Insight Lecture series.

The conversation will take place on September 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. The Brain Insight Lectures are free and open to the public with advance registration.

Sian Beilock is a psychologist renowned for her work on what’s happening in the brain when we buckle under pressure and “choke.” She took part in the 2019 SNF Conference in Athens. Joining her in the discussion as moderator will be Bianca Jones, a Fellow at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute.

The Brain Insight Lecture Series is one of two closely related initiatives at the Zuckerman institute supported by the SNF. The other, the Teacher-Scholar Program, connects New York City middle school and high school science teachers with the latest in brain research. Using the Brain Insight Lectures as case studies in subsequent workshops, teachers create a lesson plan for the semester to bring cutting-edge brain science into the classroom.
