Uptown [not just] Shakespeare in the Park Wraps up 2019 Run
29 July 2019

The summer 2019 season of Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Uptown Shakespeare in the Park wrapped up last week.

The show, an adaptation of Euripides’ The Bacchae, was free to attend with no ticket required and was staged in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided support for this season of Uptown Shakespeare in the Park, a series that does not exclusively focus on Shakespeare. This production was based on an original translation of The Bacchae by Bryan Doerries, Artistic Director at Theater of War. SNF supported his tenure as a Public Artist in Residence in New York City and has recently supported extended free runs of Theater of War’s Antigone in Ferguson.

The Classical Theatre of Harlem, founded in 1999, presents classic works through a new lens, one that prioritizes relevance to the diverse communities of Harlem and upper Manhattan.
