Greek National Opera’s Alternative Stage Travels to Milan
10 June 2019

Castello Sforzesco in Milan will be filled with melodies by Manos Hadjidakis for a magical evening on Tuesday, June 11. As part of the three-year tribute to the Greek composer, and the festival platform Milano incontra la Grecia, the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera (GNO) presents piano works by Hadjidakis performed by two distinguished young Greek pianists, Stefanos Thomopoulos and Thodoris Tzovanakis.

The concert in Milan is staged with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), as part of a €20 million grant enhancing the artistic outreach of the Greek National Opera and producing a year-long program of events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821. The GNO’s international journey began with the performance of Guiseppe Verdi’s Otello, in a co-production with one of Europe’s major festivals, the Easter Festival of Baden-Baden, at the end of April.

The SNF has extensively supported the operation of the GNO, most significantly by creating its new home as part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). In addition, the SNF supported, with a founding grant, the Alternative Stage and the implementation of its educational and social activities.
