29 May 2019

It’s the dawn of a new era for Hellenic studies at McGill University in Montreal.

On Friday, May 24th, the university inaugurated the first phase of its new Center for the Study of Greek Immigration and Diaspora.

This initial phase includes the debut of the Virtual Museum of Greek Immigration to Canada, which is part of Immigrec, a multifaceted project on Greek diaspora. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided support for the pilot project that produced the Virtual Museum of Greek Immigration to Canada. SNF representatives traveled to McGill for the inauguration event, which was also attended by the Ambassador of Greece to Canada, Dimitrios Azemopoulos.

In 2013, celebrating 70 years of partnership between Greece and Canada, SNF provided a significant grant to endow two Stavros Niarchos Foundation Fellowships for Excellence in Graduate Education, which will give Greek students the opportunity to study at McGill.

SNF has dedicated significant resources towards establishing and expanding Hellenic Studies programs in a number of academic institutions outside Greece, including at Simon Fraser University in Canada, Koç University in Turkey, Oxford University in the UK, and the University of California Los Angeles, Yale University the University of Notre Dame in the United States.
