Legends 2004, 15 Years On!

Where were you during the Euro 2004 Final? All Greeks remember exactly where we were and how we felt when the header by Angelos Charisteas brought the Euro 2004 silverware to Greece. Anxiety gave way to happiness, which turned into exuberant celebrations for what, at first, seemed impossible. Euro 2004 is one of the moments that have been recorded in our collective memory.

15 years later, the Euro 2004 Champions return. With the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), their team, Legends 2004, will share the values, memories, thrills, and joy of their achievement with their fans through a series of events. A detailed schedule of these events was presented during a joint press conference on Tuesday, May 28th, by the SNF and the NGO “Champions for Life,” which has been created by the Legends 2004 team, with the goal of promoting sports, education, and health to children and youth.

The events, which align with the dates on which the Greek National team played during Euro 2004, will take place from June 12th to July 4th, culminating with a game between Legends 2004 and Portugal Legends, in a revival of the memorable Final.

A significant part of the activities will take place in the context of the Summer Nostos Festival, organized by the SNF from June 23rd to June 30th at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).

Apart from the Final, which we long to relive, we will also see our champions, Karagounis, Katsouranis, Seitaridis, Zagorakis, and Dellas, and their teammates in different roles, on and off the field. Legends 2004 will participate in the SNF Conference on June 25th to discuss the enduring value of teamwork and its relevance for everyone, while they will also participate on June 23rd in the 6K and 10K races, as well as the 1K race along with Special Olympics athletes in the SNF’s evening race, SNF RUN: Running into the Future. Moreover, they will act as mentors for children’s football academies as part of the Legends 2004 Youth Cup, will participate in sports activities for children with disabilities, and will also compete in a match as part of the Special Olympics program “Play Unified, Learn Unified.” Last but not least, they will ask for our help in their attempts to break a number of Guinness World Records together with fans on June 16th and June 28th at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

These are the inaugural activities of the NGO “Champions for Life.” With the support of the SNF, the organization looks forward to strengthening vulnerable social groups and promoting the values of sports, cooperation, fair play, and the joy of participation.
