At an unexpectedly playful presentation on Thursday, April 4 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), journalists learned about this year's Summer Nostos Festival and discovered surprises planned this year for its visitors through a game. The presentation was hosted by stand-up comedian Lambros Fisfis, along with the SNFestival’s artistic director, Mily Paschali, who spoke in detail about this year’s program.
Presentation of the 2019 SNFestival Program
The enjoyment and carefree attitude that are too often lacking in daily life define the SNFestival. But they are not the only things that do so. Contributing to the wider community, supporting major social causes, and engaging in a dialogue on democracy are some of the important issues addressed by many of the artists appearing at this year’s event. These are people with international appeal and audiences who have chosen to take a stand. Among them: Andrew Bird, Neneh Cherry, Low, Local Natives, Brian Eno: 77 Million Paintings, Akram Khan Company, Balthazar, Lisa Hannigan & s t a r g a z e, Rita Wilson, Soap&Skin, Nakhane, Alkistis Protopsalti, Antonis Martsakis & Andonis Foniadakis, Vertigo Dance Company, Marina Satti, Victoria Thierrée Chaplin & Aurelia Thierrée, and many other artists and contributors.
Greetings from the 2019 SNFestival Artists
Most of them will be coming to the Festival fresh off a world tour with consistently sold out performances or having just released new work and thus in the spotlight of the international media. Some will be presenting new work for the first time here in Athens. Supporting healthy creative forces around the world, promoting synergies, and fostering an outward-looking mentality in Greek artists are all part of the SNFestival’s mission. This year’s ARTWORKS presentation is of particular importance: as part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship Program, 60 young artists will be presenting their work in various venues at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
Of course, the SNFestival wouldn’t be complete without the SNF RUN: Running into the Future evening race. It will be followed by another SNFestival staple: a fireworks display, a perennial favorite of young and old alike. The Summer Nostos Festival will also host the 8th SNF Annual International Conference titled... “[Untitled]” and the 2nd SNF Agora Institute Workshop, featuring distinguished speakers from all over the world.
This year’s Festival coincides with the 15th anniversary of Greece’s great victory in Euro 2004, that year’s European Soccer Championship, and the SNFestival will be participating in the celebrations with the legendary team of the European champions, with many soccer-themed and other happenings.
And, like every year, the mosaic of festival offerings will be rounded out by the stunning stages that host the events and are scattered throughout the SNFCC. Added this year to the SNFestival’s signature stages will be a new and impressive dome structure at the Labyrinth (with a roof to protect artists, contributors and festival-goers from the sun or in the event of rain) that will be incorporated in the SNFCC’s infrastructure to serve special programming needs. The new Labyrinth stage and a surprise water feature in the Canal which will be revealed to the public during the SNFestival add to the SNF’s contribution to the SNFCC and its millions of visitors.
