30 APRIL 2019 / Greek National Opera’s first co-production with Baden-Baden Easter Festival

The Greek National Opera (GNO) signed its first co-production agreement with one of Europe’s major festivals, the Easter Festival of Baden-Baden, for a staging of Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello.

The opera, with direction and set design by the great American director Robert Wilson, premiered in Baden-Baden on April 13 and will be presented in Athens in early 2022.

The co-production will be carried out within the framework of the new grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to enhance the artistic outreach of the Greek National Opera and the promotion of its work abroad. SNF has provided significant support for the GNO over the years, the most important milestone being the creation of its new home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), created through the largest single SNF grant to date. Following the official delivery of the SNFCC to the Greek State, SNF further reinforced the work of the Greek National Opera through a donation of €5 million, thus contributing to a smooth transition to its new facilities. In addition, SNF has provided support for the GNO’s Alternative Stage with a founding donation, enhancing its overall programming, as well as the many and ever-increasing programs of its Department of Educational and Social Activities.
