Expansion of Special Olympics Ηellas Programming with Support from the SNF

Apr 08, 2019
Recently, Alexandra Mega returned from the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi, having finished 4th in the 100m run. She returned after two unforgettable weeks, proud of her success and full of memories that will last a lifetime.

Alexandra is one of the hundreds of children with mental disabilities in Greece who, through sports programs and the support of Special Olympics Hellas, claim what they are entitled to: an equal place in society.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), in recognition of the important work of Special Olympics Hellas, is supporting the expansion of the organization’s program to 21 target cities in Greece, in addition to its operating costs for three years. The aim of this collaboration is to support Special Olympics Hellas’s work and, by extension, increase opportunities and access to school sports programs for a community of people accounting for 3-4% of the world’s population.

A recent three-year, $10 million grant from the SNF supports Special Olympics International’s efforts to promote unified play and learning through inclusive sport and education. Countries of focus in this partnership include Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, Serbia, and Tanzania.
