Mayor of Thessaloniki Awarded German Grand Cross by Ambassador to Greece
20 March 2019

In a ceremony held at the Goethe Institute in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, March 19th, Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by German ambassador to Greece Jens Plötner.

The decoration ceremony was held in the presence of the German Consul, Walter Stechel, representatives of the city’s various official bodies, and representatives of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), including SNF Board of Directors member Ambassador Vassilis Kaskarelis.

The decoration was a symbolic act, reaffirming ties between Greece and Germany and recognizing the personal efforts of Mayor Yiannis Boutaris to highlight the warm and friendly character of Thessaloniki.

In recent years, the SNF has actively supported through a €10 million grant the work of the Municipality of Thessaloniki following its vision for a city that is open to innovation, sustainable, and friendly to its residents and visitors. The projects implemented with the financial support of the SNF followed five main axes, specifically social policy, initiatives for innovation and entrepreneurship, the development of infrastructure and promotion for tourism and cultural heritage, civil society, and technical projects. At the same time, the actions of the grant directly created 71—indirectly created hundreds—of new jobs.
