People of all ages gathered at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) during the long weekend of Clean Monday, to celebrate the last days of the Carnival and the beginning of the Sarakosti (the 40 days of lent). Admission to all events was free with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
During the weekend, both children and adults put on their Carnival costumes, following the “Bauhaus” theme, and danced to the sounds of jazz, Afro-Caribbean music, and ‘60s swing performed by international ensembles, as well as DJ sets.
On Clean Monday, the sky over the park was filled with colorful kites and the Great Lawn was transformed into an endless traditional dance stage. The dancing was guided by the musicians, singers and dancers of the Glyfada Horostasi Folk Music and Dance Club and the historic Argonaftai-Komnenoi Pontic Association of Kallithea, forming a big circle with the crowd, where everyone danced traditional dances from every corner of Greece, such as kalamatianos, syrtos, tsamikos, and even pyrrichios.
Happy Sarakosti to everyone! Celebrations continue at the SNFCC throughout March.
