06 FEBRUARY 2019 / Greek National Opera Education Project Advances in Fedora Prizes Competition

The proposal by the Greek National Opera (GNO), titled “Co-OPERAtive: An intercultural and collaborative opera hub,” which was submitted to the Fedora Prizes competition in early December 2018 in the category of educational programs, has qualified for the next phase of the competition.

The core of the proposal entails the development of a creative hub, based on opera and ballet. In this creative context, mixed teams, comprising unaccompanied refugee and Greek minors, between the ages of 15 and 17, will attend music, theater, and dance lessons for a period of six months, and then work together to organize a musical theater performance, to be presented in the summer of 2020. The next phase of the Fedora competition, for which four finalists will qualify, requires the creation of a crowdfunding campaign, which will determine the final winner.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has extensively supported the operation of the GNO, most significantly by creating its new home as part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). In addition, the SNF supports, with a founding grant, the Alternative Stage and the implementation of its Educational and Social activities for children, adults and people over 65 years old, as well as people with disabilities and refugees. As part of its support for the GNO, the SNF recently announced a grant of €20 million for the implementation of a four-year programming and development plan to enhance the artistic outreach of the Opera.
