Inauguration of New Linear Accelerator at the University General Hospital of Heraklion
28 January 2019

On Monday, January 28th, the University General Hospital of Heraklion inaugurated its new linear accelerator, which is already in clinical operation. The procurement of the radiotherapy equipment was made possible through a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Representatives of the Foundation, as well as the Greek Minister of Health, attended the event.

This is the second linear accelerator to have been procured within the framework of the Radiotherapy Program, which has supported the purchase and installation of 10 linear accelerators in seven public hospitals in Greece (in Athens, Alexandroupoli, Heraklion, Larissa, Patras, and Thessaloniki). The new, state-of-the-art equipment will contribute significantly to the improvement of treatment for cancer patients throughout the country.

The grant also supports training programs for hospital personnel to ensure optimal operation of the radiotherapy equipment.
