The SNF to Receive Award for its Contribution in the field of Radiotherapy in Greece

Nov 05, 2018
On Saturday, November 3rd, 2018, representatives of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) attended a one-day workshop, which was held by the Hellenic Society of Radiation Oncologists, focusing on collaborative approaches to cancer treatment.
During the workshop, the SNF was awarded for its contribution to the improvement of cancer treatment in Greece.

The SNF is supporting a large-scale grant, totaling €20 million, pertaining to the replacement of ten linear accelerators in seven public hospitals across Greece, and the free maintenance of each linear accelerator for two years. The SNF grant is nearly complete, with nine machines already in full operation. The remaining one linear accelerator is expected to start its clinical operation by the end of November.

Under the same initiative, the SNF supports the implementation of training programs for the scientific personnel of each public hospital that has received a new linear accelerator. The programs include theoretical and practical training in Greece and abroad, in order to ensure optimal operation of the radiotherapy equipment.

In addition, aiming to further enhance the radiotherapy field in Greece, the SNF supports a €5 million grant to the 401 Military Hospital of Athens, which includes the purchase of equipment, including two new linear accelerators, as well as the restoration and expansion of the Hospital’s Radiotherapy Department, which, in addition to military personnel, serves the general public.
