26 NOVEMBER 2018 / The SNF Supports the 2018 Hellenic Authors’ Society Awards

As part of the “Athens 2018 World Book Capital” events, for which lead support is provided by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), on Friday November 23rd, the 2018 Hellenic Authors’ Society awards was presented.

The awards recognize prominent individuals from Greece and abroad for their literary contribution. The event was held with the SNF’s support.

Among the honorees of this year’s awards were Alexandra Samouil, author and Assistant Professor at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, University of Cyprus and Willis Barnstone, American poet, critic, translator and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University. SNF representatives were attended the ceremony to present the “Yannis Varveris” award, named after the poet and founding member of the Hellenic Authors’ Society, which aims to showcase young Greek poets.

In October 2018, with the SNF’s support, the Hellenic Authors’ Society held its International Symposium, titled “Why Read: The Role of Writers and Books in the 21st Century”, which convened distinguished Greek and foreign authors, critics, translators and academics to discuss about the future of writing and the changing relationship between authors, books and readers, as well as between language and translation.
