This is the 37th mission of the Units, following visits to the islands of Fournoi, Ikaria and, most recently, Agathonisi, as well as the remote area of Laimos, in Prespes.
During the four days of the visit, 525 people were examined and a total of 1,224 medical appointments and 17 surgical procedures were carried out by the scientific team and the medical and nursing staff that accompany the units on each of their visits. In addition, a series of lectures were held focusing on learning difficulties, first aid and CPR techniques and mental disorders.
The Mobile Athletiatric Unit of the Sports Excellence program, which is implemented by Regeneration & Progress, with the exclusive support of the SNF, visited Patmos along with the MMUs to organize sports activities for children. Out of the school’s 102 students, 95 participated in the sports activities held.
Every month, throughout the year, the MMUs visit islands and isolated areas in Greece, responding to the fundamental need of all residents of the country for open access to all medical specialties, as well as to specialized medical equipment. The MMUs is an initiative undertaken by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and is carried out with the exclusive support of the SNF, by the NGO “Regeneration & Progress”, under the scientific supervision of the Olympic Village Polyclinic and the 1st Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Athens University Medical School.
