Presentation on the SNFCC’s Development on Conference for the Future of Construction
13 NOVEMBER 2018

On Monday November 12th the Association of Businesses for Quality and Development in Construction organized a conference regarding the future of construction in Greece. Mrs. Elly Andriopoulou, SNFCC Grant Manager, was invited to present the history and philosophy behind the SNFCC’s development from the moment it was conceived by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The SNFCC is the Foundation’s largest single grant. The project’s total cost is $861 million. Designed by the architectural firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the SNFCC is a sustainable, world-class cultural, educational and recreational urban complex that includes new facilities for the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, located within the Stavros Niarchos Park. The SNFCC is one of the world’s most sustainable building complexes of its size. In November 2016, the SNFCC achieved the highest and most stringent international standard for sustainable design and construction - the Platinum LEED – for its innovative architecture and green technology. The platinum LEED certification is awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Furthermore the SNFCC is the first public-private partnership of its kind in Greece, and the largest cultural/educational project ever undertaken in the country. As one of the biggest projects in recent Greek history, the Center is an engine of short- and mid-term economic stimulus. It is a testament and commitment to the country’s future.

The conference was attended by members from a diverse group of associations in the construction industry including among others architects, designers, consultants, civil engineers, etc. Participants and presenters alike made numerous references to the SNFCC as a model for design, construction, and project management that other projects should aspire to.
