The SNF Attends the 2018 Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan

Sep 28, 2018
From September 24th to September 28th, 2018, the Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Forum, one of the flagship events during the year-long 50th anniversary celebration of Special Olympics, took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), among others.

The Forum brought together youth leaders, with and without intellectual disabilities, from over 40 countries and representatives from the worlds of sport, business, government and philanthropy, as part of Special Olympics’ global plan to promote youth engagement and create inclusive policies around sports and education, through its Unified Sports and Unified Schools platforms. Over the course of the five-day Forum, young people worked  together with experts and leaders in their respective fields to develop and expand their understanding of how they can drive social inclusion in their country. SNF representatives also took part in the Forum.

In June, the SNF and Special Olympics International announced a landmark collaboration, with a three-year, $10 million grant by SNF, aiming to expand the reach and impact of Special Olympics’ school-based inclusive sports and education programming to more schools worldwide. The announcement took place as part of the 7th International SNF Conference on Philanthropy, which featured Special Olympics Chairman, Dr. Timothy Shriver, as the keynote speaker.

On October 3rd, the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) published an article discussing the SNF grant to Special Olympics as well as the SNF representatives’ attendance at the 2018 Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Forum.
