The Mobile Medical Units Travel to the Island of Agathonisi
17 September 2018

From September 14th to September 16th, 2018, the Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) were to the island of Agathonisi to provide free, comprehensive medical care of high quality and support to the island’s residents.

Every month, throughout the year, MMUs visit islands and isolated areas in Greece, responding to the fundamental need of all residents of the country for open access to all medical specialties, as well as to specialized medical equipment.

MMUs is an initiative undertaken by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and is carried out with the exclusive support of the SNF, by the NGO “Regeneration & Progress”, under the scientific supervision of the Olympic Village Polyclinic and the 1st Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Athens University Medical School.

On each mission, MMUs are accompanied by a medical team specialized in a wide range of disciplines, qualified nursing and technical staff, as well as medical school students, amongst others. During their most recent visit to the area of Prespes, in July, Mobile Medical Units completed a series of medical and diagnostic examinations, including X-Rays and ultrasounds, mammography and Pap tests, electrocardiograms and bone density measurements, among others.
