10 MAY 2018 / The SNF was Awarded the Gennadius Prize 2018 for its Contribution to the Advancement of Greek Studies Worldwide

On Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation received the Gennadius Prize from the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

During the award ceremony that was held in New York, a short video was screened that features representatives of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), as well as the author and architectural historian, Victoria Newhouse, discussing the role of libraries in Greece today, and particularly how the role of the Greek National Library (NLG) has been transformed following its relocation to its new home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the SNF’s largest single grant. The video shows how NLG is gradually changing from a place of study and research into a vibrant public place, a meeting point that promotes interaction and the exchange of ideas.

The relocation of NLG to the SNFCC was made possible through an exclusive grant of €5 million from the SNF which will cover among others the development of the NLG’s collection, the creation of the Library’s digital services, the development of the Library’s Public Section, an audience development campaign and staff training.
