SNF Grantee, Cousteau Divers, Joins Forces with Diving Partners for the Creation of the First Marine Protected Area in Santorini
29 May 2018

On World Oceans Day, June 8th, 2018, Cousteau Divers, the organization founded by Pierre-Yves Cousteau, together with the Healthy Seas Initiative, Ghost Fishing and Atlantis Dive Center will carry out the first ever ghost net removal mission at the marine protected area (MPA) of Santorini.

With the help of local fishermen, the lost fishing gear will be safely recovered from the area, while the mission will be livestreamed for educational purposes and narrated by Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Educational institutions, including the National Library of Greece, will carry a livestream of the event.

Cousteau Divers initiated and supervises the Santorini MPA project since 2011, working with the HCMR (Hellenic Center for Marine Research) to baseline the ecosystems of Santorini and with Submon to create a management plan for the area, with a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
