21 May 2018

On Saturday May 19 General Hospital of Athens “Laiko” organized a scientific conference with the theme “Transplants in Hospitals”, on the occasion of one year since the inauguration of its reconstructed Renal Transplant Unit.

The renovation was made possible with a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation as part of the SNF’s Initiative Against the Greek Crisis.

104 successful transplant operations have been carried out since the completion of the Renal Transplant Unit’s reconstruction. During the same period 608 transplant receivers have been cared for in the clinic and all of them expressed their satisfaction for the level of care which was much higher compared to their past similar experiences according to a study conducted on September 2017. Besides renal transplants, since November 2017, 4 liver transplants have been carried out successfully and in addition, the reconstructed Unit has made child transplant operations possible in collaboration with the “Aglaia Kyriakou” Hospital. The direct beneficiaries of the grant include the general population of Athens and Attica.

The transplant unit has been fundamentally redesigned and reconstructed with a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for the first time since 1972. The renal unit operates in its current form since May 2017.
