The SNF Supports the Athens 2018 World Book Capital
18 April 2018

The program of the Athens 2018 World Book Capital was presented today by the Mayor of Athens, Mr. George Kaminis. The city of Athens was selected by UNESCO to host the global institution of the World Book Capital, which was launched initially in 2001.

The program of events will begin on April 23rd, 2018, coinciding with the World Book Day, and will be completed on April 23rd, 2019. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is a major donor of Athens 2018 World Book Capital.

The schedule of events aims to enhance the access of all citizens to books and reading, taking particular care for programs directed towards children, refugees and immigrants. The program, whose goal is to make reading part of our everyday lives, includes among others festivals, talks, conferences, educational programs and art contests.

The collaboration of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation with the City of Athens spans on multiple levels and areas and includes support for a number of projects such as the Open Schools program and Athens Culture Net. The SNF has actively supported the field of books with a number of grants, starting with the support of the National Library of Greece and its transition to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the development of the network of public and municipal libraries throughout the country under the umbrella of Future Library and the support for university libraries.
