Renzo Piano in Le Monde on the SNF Initiative to Support the Health Sector in Greece

The renowned architect Renzo Piano, recently gave an interview to Le Monde, where among others he referred to his upcoming involvement in the SNF’s initiative to support the Health Sector in Greece.

On March 21st, 2018 the SNF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Greek State, regarding the implementation of SNF’s initiative to proceed with major grants to support Greece’s Health sector, with an initial budget expected to exceed $238 million. The SNF will undertake the task of fully funding four major infrastructure interventions throughout the country, along with the procurement of new medical equipment and the implementation of educational programs.

The design of the infrastructure projects to be carried out within the framework of the initiative will be undertaken by Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), designers of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, whose participation in the project will contribute towards introducing a new philosophy for harmonizing treatment areas with the natural environment.

On March 23rd and March 24th SNF representatives, along withRenzo Piano and members of RPBW, visited the sites of the new infrastructure projects in Komotini, Thessaloniki and Athens (Evangelismos Hospital).

In his interview with Le Monde, Renzo Piano stated: “The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, for which we have built the National Library of Athens, wants to offer three hospitals to the Greek State. The Foundation turned to us…You don’t build three hospitals just because you have to build hospitals, of course. You do it because each one is a textbook case. Whether you are a patient, a doctor, a nurse or a patient’s parent, you are having difficult moments there. We have to understand this drama…
