22 FEBRUARY 2018 / AFP on the Relocation of the National Library of Greece to the SNFCC

A few months away from the completion of the historic transition of the National Library of Greece to its new premises at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), the international news agency “Agence France-Presse (AFP)” hosts an extensive feature on NLG’s relocation to its new home at the SNFCC.

The article notes that the library’s new and spacious facilities will improve the provided services, while also attract a larger number of visitors. In particular, Ms. Vasiliki Tsigouni, who is responsible for the reading rooms at the library, states that “the National Library had approximately 20,000 visitors and 21,000 readers each year. At its new facilities, the annual number of visitors and readers is expected to be 10 times higher”. In addition, the article highlights the hidden “treasures” of NLG’s rare book collection, making also a reference to the ongoing digitization project and the library’s new lending service.

Finally, the article references the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) as “one of the country's leading philanthropic organisations”, noting its significant contribution to the SNFCC’s creation, particularly in times of crisis in Greece.

The relocation of NLG to the SNFCC, and into a new era, is made possible through an exclusive grant of €5 million from the SNF which will cover among others the development of the NLG’s collection, the creation of the Library’s digital services, the development of the Library’s Public Section, an audience development campaign and staff training.
