On Thursday, December 7th, 2017, the FC Barcelona Foundation received the “Foundation of the Year” prize at the 10th edition of the Peace & Sport Awards, in recognition of the social impact that its support programs for refugee children and teenagers in refugee reception centers in Europe and the Middle East have.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) is collaborating with the FC Barcelona Foundation for the implementation of sports and education programs in refugee sites and local hosting communities that follow the FutbolNet methodology, and are made possible with a grant from the SNF. The specific methodology uses sports as a means to promote peace, tolerance and understanding and to ultimately foster social inclusion and integration, through education on values and reflection tools that stimulate children and young people.

In its first phase of implementation, the FutbolNet methodology program has already taken root! More than 1.000 children and teenagers from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, amongst other countries, have participated in the sports activities held as part of the program, in Greece, Italy and Lebanon. Through their participation in football games and training sessions, children learned how to cooperate with their peers, to respect the rules and how to use dialogue as a means to prevent and solve conflicts. Children participated with particular enthusiasm in daily trainings, and through football they found solace, made new friends and lived unforgettable moments.

The awards ceremony was held in Monaco and was attended by global delegate representatives from the sports, government, media and the nonprofit sector. At the event, the first Vice-President of FC Barcelona and the Barça Foundation, Jordi Cardoner, during his brief remarks, referenced the instrumental support of the SNF in the development and success of the programs.
