08 DECEMBER 2017 / Inauguration of the new linear accelerator (linac) at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli

On Friday, December 8th, 2017, the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli inaugurated the new linear accelerator (linac) which is already in clinical operation thanks to an exclusive grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), as part of the program for the replacement of radiotherapy equipment in public hospitals across Greece.

Initiated and supported exclusively by the SNF, the Radiotherapy Program supports the replacement of 10 obsolete linear accelerators in seven public hospitals in Greece. The new, state-of-the-art equipment will significantly improve the treatment of cancer patients throughout the country. The program, which also supports the implementation of theoretical and practical training for the relevant scientific personnel, in Greece and abroad, is expected to be completed in 2018.

So far the installation of the new pieces of radiotherapy equipment has been completed in the following hospitals: the Theagenio Cancer Hospital, Thessaloniki, the University General Hospital of Heraklion, the General University Hospital of Patras (Rio), the University General Hospital of Larissa and the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli. At the Athens General Hospital “Alexandra” and the Attikon University General Hospital construction and installation works are still ongoing.
