24 NOVEMBER 2017 / PEN America Center, a SNF grantee, hosts “Breakout: Voices From the Inside” Event

On Tuesday, November 28th, 2017, PEN America will host “Breakout: Voices from the Inside”, an annual event to recognize and celebrate excellence in prison writing. The event is open to the public, and will take place in New York City.

The event honors the best writing submitted to the PEN Prison Writing Contest. The winning works will be read by prominent authors to spotlight the work produced by incarcerated men and women across the country.

The Prison Writing Contest is coordinated by the PEN Prison Writing Program, which provides 20,000 inmates across the United States with skilled writing teachers and audiences for their work. Founded in 1971, the program believes in the restorative, rehabilitative power of writing.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation provides support for the Prison Writing Program.
