The Municipality of Athens wins prestigious award for its initiatives towards vulnerable social groups
11 October 2017

Among 21 countries and a total of 206 entries, the Municipality of Athens was awarded the first prize of EU’s Urban Innovative Actions, accompanied by an award of $5.9 million, for its proposal “Curing the Limbo’’ with regards to refugees’ social integration.

Athens’ proposal was based on the experience gained by the Municipality of Athens through the implementation of the Temporary Housing Program for Refugees and the operation of the Coordination Center for Immigrants and Refugees, run by Athens Partnership, with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). The ’Curing the Limbo’ proposal includes cooperative activities for coping with the harmful inertia of refugees in “limbo” during their stay in Athens, as well as the feeling of uncertainty regarding their future.

The idea was drawn from the awarded online platform ‘’SynAthina’’, supported by the SNF, which operates as a meeting point for active Athenians in order to stimulate action for the improvement of the quality of life in the city.

The innovative program is implemented in collaboration with strategic partners including among others the International Rescue Committee, which has received a grant by the SNF to support its emergency response efforts.
