The Edible Academy is an educational program, which features hands-on activities and programs that help children, families, and teachers learn about growing vegetables, fruits, and herbs while encouraging a lifelong interest in gardening and healthful living.
The new space will add a teaching greenhouse, enabling the Academy to extend their programming to become year-round. This extended programming will also be supported by a brand new classroom building, with two classrooms for winter programming. Two new pavilions are being installed, and the South Pavilion will host solar panels on its roof, which will serve the dual purpose of offsetting the facility’s electricity needs, and teaching the children about sustainable building practices. The grand opening for the new facility will take place in June of 2018.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation provided support for the construction of the new facility, and has provided significant support for education programs at the New York Botanical Garden.
