Preparations for the compilation of the collection started thirty days ago and since then scientists and professionals from the library and book publishing field have been going through 50,000 books from the recent Greek book production, from which 25,000 books for children, young adults and adults, have been selected to form the basis of the Lending Department.
As specifically mentioned in the article, the NLG’s new department aspires to become “a model public library, a platform of experimentation for programs and library practices, which would be subsequently adopted by all public libraries across Greece”, thereby creating a “book society.”
The establishment of the NLG’s new Lending Department is part of the project for the transition of NLG to its new home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), made possible through an exclusive grant of €5 million from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The SNF’s grant will cover, among others, the development of the NLG’s collection, the creation of the Library’s digital services, the development of the Library’s Public Section, an audience development campaign and staff training.
