26 MAY 2017 / SNF Named Among Top Funders Responding to the Refugee Crisis by Inside Philanthropy

A recent article featured in Inside Philanthropy, listed the Stavros Niarchos Foundation among top funders responding to the refugee crisis. The article mentions the International Rescue Committee and Doctors Without Borders as top recipients of grants in this space, both of which are SNF grantees.

Other top funders mentioned include the Conrad Hilton Foundation, the IKEA Foundation, Cisco, and the Gates Foundation, among others.

Since 2015, the SNF has funded 13 grants totaling $6,250,000 to provide relief to asylum seekers through support to organizations and civil society efforts in Greece. The Foundation has supported a variety of organizations in this space, from grassroots volunteer-based organizations, such as Starfish, Organization Earth and Lifeguards Hellas, to established leaders of international aid efforts, such as Doctors Without Borders and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Furthermore, the SNF has supported important Greek NGO’s in the field, such as Praksis, Metadrasi and the Greek Council for Refugees.

Additionally, the Foundation has made a $15 million grant over five years to the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to supports its global emergency response efforts (including its programs in Greece) and organizational infrastructure systems.
