The events at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center continue

Aug 30, 2016
The program of events at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) continue unabated throughout September. As announced by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), on August 16th the project was delivered to the SNF by the joint venture, thus officially signaling the beginning the delivery process to the Greek State.

Alongside the completion of the SNFCC, the SNF wanted to make the project immediately accessible to the public, by presenting a rich program of events that will accompany the project throughout the entire delivery process, which is expected to be completed by the turn of the new year. The events, which are free and open to all, take place with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

The aim of the events is to transform the SNFCC into an open, living space, where all citizens have access to the arts, culture, education and sports; a place that promotes creativity and establishes an open dialogue with the future we all dream of, for our city and our entire society.

The co-president of the SNF, Mr. Andreas C. Dracopoulos, stated: “It fills us with pride and joy to witness this project—which a few years ago only existed on paper and in our imagination—come to life, echo with the sound of children’s laughter and be embraced so warmly by our fellow citizens. The people’s warm response, both during the June events, as well as in these last two weeks that the SNFCC has opened its doors, give us the impetus and motivation to do our best and raise the bar even higher in terms of the project’s future.”

Summer opening hours of the SNFCC will be from 06:00 a.m. to midnight. Winter opening hours will be from 06:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m. The free events include, among others, wellness and sports programs, activities for children and families, film screenings and musical concerts.

All areas of the SNFCC are accessible to people with disabilities and, soon, golf carts will also be available for the use of people with disabilities for their transfer inside the Stavros Niarchos Park. The Chief Executive Officer of the SNFCC, Mr. Dimitris Protopsaltou, stated: “It is our wish that everyone who visits the SNFCC discovers part of themselves there, and it is our goal to establish the SNFCC as a destination for everyone. The respect and care with which visitors have approached the project, fills us with hope for the future.”
As part of the sports activities, the NGO Regeneration & Progress organizes races for children and adults, among other activities. During the days when the races take place, participants will have at their disposal the free services offered by the Mobile Medical Units, a project implemented by the NGO Regeneration & Progress, under the supervision of the 1st University Orthopedic Clinic. The activities of the NGO Regeneration & Progress are supported exclusively by the SNF.

Specifically, on September 10th, a 5 km running race and a 2 km walking race will take place, for women only. On the same day, from 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m., the medical staff of the Mobile Medical Units will provide services and free tests, which will include, among others, free three-dimensional digital mammogram, Pap tests, bone density tests, breast ultrasounds and fitness & nutrition counseling.

Similar activities will take place on October 2nd, when a 2 km race for children will take place, with the participation of children from the Special Olympics, during which free services will be provided by pediatricians, ophthalmologists, dentists, orthopedists and nutritionists. Finally, on November 27th, alongside the 5 km race for men, similar services will be offered with special screening tests for prostate cancer, cardiovascular and bowel checks, etc.

Dr. Panagiotis Koulouvaris, President of NGO Regeneration & Progress and Head Lecturer at the University Orthopedic Clinic, noted “It is our great pleasure that we are able to offer a variety of activities for our fellow citizens in what is becoming our country’s premier new cultural destination, the SNFCC. We are at the Park on a daily basis, teaching exercise, games and a new way of life.”

The program series of film screenings “Park Your Cinema” continues every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, renewing its rendezvous with the city’s cinephile audience.

In September, the Stavros Niarchos Park hosts two separate weekends of musical concerts from the series “Parklife”, presenting a variety of different musical styles. The weekend of September 10 and 11, the Stavros Niarchos Park organizes a musical feast during a weekend, dedicated to traditional Greek music. On Saturday, September 10, we embark on a musical journey with Psarantonis, Katerina Papadopoulou & the Anastatica Project, with the participation of Socrates Sinopoulos. On Sunday, September 11, we experience the musical treat of Petros (Petroloukas) Chalkias and the Thrakomelo music band.

The weekend of September 24 and 25, is dedicated to the sounds of classical music, with Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, but also new interpretations of the Beatles, at the Stavros Niarchos Park. On Saturday, September 24, MOYSA - Thessaloniki Concert Hall Youth Symphony Orchestra meets renowned pianist Emmanuel Lazaridis, while on Sunday, September 25, there will be a concert with the participation of the Orchestra, Choir, Children’s Choir and Soloists of the Green National Opera, under the musical direction of Elias Voudouris. Moreover, the Music Escapades concert series continues at the Visitors Center, hosting music for dreamers with electronic influences and minimal aesthetics.

Finally, guided tours continue at the facilities of the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece. Following the increased demand for these tours, their number has now increased to seven tours daily. Due to the high turnout, and in order to serve as many visitors as possible, pre-registration will now be required, only for guided tours as well as for individual sports activities such as races. Participation in all other programs and daily events will take place on a first-come-first-serve basis.
