The 33rd historical ultramarathon Spartathlon starts on September 25th, with the SNF support

The 33rd historical ultramarathon “Spartathlon” will take place, with the participation of 380 runners coming from 50 different countries.

The SNF has traditionally supported this historical race over the years, which covers a 247km journey from Athens to Sparta. The ‘Spartathlon’ revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens. Thus, Spartathlon becomes one of the most difficult and satisfying ultra-distance races in the world because of its unique history and background. This year, the event will take place between 25th and 26th September, and will be live streamed on
