Collaboration of the National Library of Greece with Future Library
20 December 2013

The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs announced the collaboration of the National Library of Greece (NLG) with the Future Library organization, which is supported exclusively by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

At this time of severe economic downturn, the relocation of the NLG’s collection to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), whose construction is made possible by SNF’s largest grant, provides the best possible resolution to its limited space. This hopeful prospect however does not solve the major problems currently faced by the NLG, which relate to the organization and implementation of its transition to its new premises, as well as its operation as a whole.

The objective of Future Library, which was established in 2011 with the initiative and exclusive support of the SNF, is to enhance the country’s network of public and municipal libraries and to ultimately connect them to the NLG once it moves to the SNFCC.

The NLG and Future Library will work together to ensure the best possible design, organization and implementation of the relocation of the NLG’s collections to the SNFCC, as well as on other activities, such as training the NLG’s human resources, upgrading its digital and other services, informing the scientific and general public of the endeavor and attract them to the library, and many others which will de defined by the NLG’s emerging needs.
