On October 7th, 2013 the Queens Library Foundation honored the Stavros Niarchos Foundation during its 13th Annual Gala. Program officer, Argero Siklas, received the award on behalf of the Foundation.
The Queens Library Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support the Library’s thousands of public programs and services, offered through its 62 branches to the more than 2.3 million people that visit them every year. The Queens Library honored the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for “its unwavering commitment to public libraries and support for disaster relief efforts at Queens Library and throughout the world.” In the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, the SNF provided a grant to Queens Public Library to support the system’s libraries in the Rockaways (Queens), one of the areas most impacted by the storm. Some of these branches were serving as community centers and social service providers, addressing a range of immediate needs. The grant provided also support to the Queens Public Library for preparing to address long-term needs, including the rebuilding of certain branches that were permanently damaged.
