The Stavros Niarchos Foundation announces that Ambassador Vassilis Kaskarelis, Former Secretary General of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joins the organization in an advisory role

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation announced today that Ambassador Vassilis Kaskarelis, former Secretary General of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has joined the Foundation as Senior Advisor to its Board of Directors and as a member of the organization’s Executive Management. Ambassador Kaskarelis brings to the Foundation his extensive and multidimensional experience, as a result of his long diplomatic career and a deep knowledge of national and international affairs.

His distinguished diplomatic career, and his extensive experience in addressing critical and complex issues guarantee that his contribution to the Foundation will be important, productive, and multifaceted,” said Andreas Dracopoulos, Co-President of the Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Ambassador Vassilis Kaskarelis was born in Athens in 1948 and studied Economics and Political Science at the University of Thessaloniki, and Law at the University of Athens. He has been a member of the Greek Foreign Service since 1974. In July 2012, he was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between 2009 and 2012, he was the Ambassador of Greece in Washington. He has served as Permanent Representative of the Hellenic Republic to the European Union (2004-2009), where he actively participated in critical discussions and developments for the future of the Union (Treaty of Lisbon, Financial Perspective, Enlargement, Relations with Russia and Turkey, Transatlantic Relations, etc.). During 2000-2004, he was Permanent Representative of the Hellenic Republic to NATO, while between 1994 and 2000 he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of the Hellenic Republic to the United Nations. He has served at the Greek Embassies in Ankara and Nicosia, and as Consul General in West Berlin during the fall of the Berlin Wall. He is the recipient of the Grand-Cross of the Order of the Phoenix and Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix, bestowed upon him by the President of the Hellenic Republic, as well the Knight of the Order of Merit, bestowed upon him by the President of the French Republic. In 2011, Ambassador Kaskarelis was named Diplomat of the Year by the World Affairs Council, amongst 183 ambassadors, at an event held in Los Angeles.
