The historical Spartathlon ultramarathon revives for yet another year
28 September 2011

For the seventh year running, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation supports the historical Spartathlon ultramarathon, which celebrated, this year, the 29th anniversary of the first contemporary revival of the historical journey by British Philhellene John Fodden and his team.

Spartathlon is an historical ultra distance marathon held annually in Greece, in honor of the Athenian runner Pheidippides, who covered the 247 Km journey from Athens to Sparta in a day. Spartathlon is, by definition, one of the hardest and most demanding long distance races globally, which also stands apart for its unique historical background and functions as an ambassador for Greek history. This year, the race will take place from September 30th to October 1st.
